Birmingham’s: Sturgeon Bay, WI

(Her) I’m beginning to think that we are jinxed when it comes to burgers and recommendations.    When a friend recommends a restaurant and tells you it’s one of the best burgers they’ve ever had in their lives–walk away.  Because we were specifically coming here on the aforementioned burger endorsements, the entire table (minus the vegetarians) ordered the burger in some fashion or another.  I wish we got the burger in the photo.  What we got was basically, a lightly squashed meatball that was so undercooked it was cold in the center placed on some wonder bread that quickly turned to goo once the pink juices started flowing from the meat.  The burger was so small, the bread overwhelmed it.  The whole experience  reminded me of when you were a kid and you REALLY wanted a McDonald’s hamburger and your mother says to you in her mothery voice “we can make the same thing at home”.  I’m not sure what was wrong with the cook that day, maybe it was wrong to show up on a Friday expecting burgers and not fish.  I believe the many reviews out there that say the burgers are good and “amazing” but I don’t think we’ll be giving them a chance to redeem themselves as my hubby can be pretty unforgiving.

Value……7  Ambience…..7 (very typical Wisconsin)  Food……3

(Him)
This is foggy memory here. Nothing sticks out as being good or tasty. The only redeeming thing about this place was the late 70’s Pinball machine. Lots of play for a quarter. So overpay for a tiny meatball burger on white bread and get your money’s worth in pinball. I really got nothing else to say. No need to go here or think about it.

Kangaroostaurant: Fox Valley, Wisconsin

(Her)  I’m in love with the Kangaroostaurant and I’ve only officially been there once myself, but I was extolling it’s virtues to countless people even before I had eaten there.  When I’m hungry I like to look at their menu and weekly schedule and drool.  I’m just in love with the idea of a “restaurant” that’s always changing their menu, trying new things, keeping known favorites, and generally evolving.  I also love anything that’s dog friendly because if you know me, you know that the dog goes everywhere I do.  So with that said….food trucks where have you been all my life and why hasn’t someone thought of this sooner? The Lox Club in Combined Locks, Wisconsin

(Her) My first impression of the Lox Club unfortunately, was the strong smell of bar disinfectant and old carpet as we walked in.  I’m not so shallow though as to go by first impressions and we we warmly greeted as we were sat by the bar and given menus.  A quick rundown of the history of this place tells us that it was started by a local Little Chute mill worker who dreamed of owning a supper club and is now being run by two of his children, Joe and Cindy.  We met Joe at the bar and he kept up with my hubby’s constant questions and we later got some glimpses of Cindy as the kitchen door swung open. Coaches Corner in Buchanan, Wisconsin

(Her)  My first impression of this place was “holy crap it’s cold in here!”  I mean so uncomfortably cold that I couldn’t uncross my arms.  It used to be a place called Charcoal grill and they don’t seem to have done anything different to make it Coaches Corner.  In fact, I’m pretty sure they even kept the original dirt.  Continue reading
